Interplay of the website with the email list-server

When an item is posted to the website, either a new article or a comment to one, the email list-server is a "member" of the website and it gets a "notification" of the new item. Each person subscribed1 to the email list will get an email notification which will look something like the following:

(from the Jones Valley list server)
Greetings email_list,2

You cannot reply to that notification message. It just comes back to the webmaster.
You need to click on the link: http://jonesvalley.us/drupal/trust#comment-84
(feel free to practice with that one)

That takes you to the website and you will be able to read the item UNLESS it was posted as a family-only item in which case you must be registered on the site AND be logged in.

Once you get logged into the site, stay there unless you are on a public computer. Don't log out. The system should keep you logged in indefinitely on most computers.

So, assuming you know your username and password, the cycle goes like this:

  1. Log into the website. Stay logged in.
  2. Someone -- maybe even you -- posts either a new article like maybe a blog entry about your family doings or posts a comment to an existing article.
  3. The website sends out notifications -- the list-server gets one.
  4. You click on the link in the notification email and it takes you to the article on the website.
  5. You read it and possibly post a comment to it.

The other way to stay current is to go to the website and look in the RIGHT-hand column for "Recently Updated Items" that are listed there. Best to be logged in when you do.

Footnotes:

1 If you are a family member or frequent guest of the family, you may sign up on the email list by clicking here. Read more about the list subscription here.

2 The name "email_list" refers to the "fake" membership this website has on the list-server.
