Dig for crystals at Fisher Mountain

Want to try to strike it rich? Well, you won't do that at Fisher Mountain but you can have a lot of fun digging for crystals. There is a map below.  Some photos of examples are at the bottom of the page.  First, what to take?

Wear stout shoes or boots. No flip-flops!  You'll be digging in the remains of open-pit mining operations that have been shut down for many years.  Implements you'll want:

  • A scraper, like the 3-claw garden tool.
  • A pry bar if you want to dislodge some larger rocks -- 24-36" crowbar would do.
  • A grubbing hoe could be handy as well.
  • Small weed tool -- the kind with a forked notch on the end -- can also help.
  • A can or bucket to put your prizes in.
  • Gloves

Take a picnic basket too. You'll want to stay a while and the view is super. Stop your digging and have a snack while you absorb the great out-of-doors.

By all means take a camera.

You are going first to Judy's Crystals 'n Things. See the map below.  It's 21.1 miles to Judy's.

The cost is $10 per person for as long as you want to be up there so I'd suggest going before noon, take that picnic lunch, and make a solid half-day out of it. At Judy's you'll pay your fee, get a key to the gate and directions to the entrance.

At the mountain, you'll be going up a steep and rough mining road. It's not real rough as such roads go. My Chevy Avalanche had no problem and I saw one sedan up there. No need for 4-wheel drive as long as it's dry. I would not go in the wet, but going a day after a hard rain might uncover some goodies.
