Alan Shane Nichols, second of five children of Karen Foster and Tom Nichols, was born August 26, 1968, in Houston, Texas. On October 15, 1994, in Atlanta, Georgia, he married Hyunjoo “Jewel” Chang (born September 8, 1967, in Seoul, Korea.

In 1986, Shane graduated from Houston’s High School for Engineering. The following fall, he enrolled in Vanderbilt University and majored in Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. Shane earned his bachelor’s degree in 1990. While at Vanderbilt, Shane met Jewel; he followed her to Atlanta after graduation. In Atlanta, Shane worked for Process Control Corporation as an engineer for four years (including a two-year stint back in Houston). In August 1994, Shane enrolled in Emory University’s School of Law and is a member of the class of 1997. During the summer of 1996, Shane worked for the Atlanta intellectual property law firm of Deveau, Colton & Marquis. Shane and Jewel were married in Atlanta on October 15, 1994.

Jewel’s family moved to America from Seoul, Korea, in 1977. Her father is an electrical engineer and came to America one year prior to moving the rest of his family here. Jewel’s older brother, David, is an electrical engineer and works for Scientific-Atlanta. Her younger sister, Kristine, is a classmate of Shane’s at Emory Law School. Jewel graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. Four years later, she received her M.D. from Emory University’s School of Medicine. Jewel is currently a resident physician in pathology at Emory University Hospital.
