Joe Berly grew up in Texas and went to junior high school in Oak Cliff (Dallas). He graduated in 1969 from Minot High School in Minot, North Dakota. He went through an apprenticeship and worked as a carpenter, building houses, until he decided to work in the mission where his father works, the Hagerstown Union Rescue Mission. Joe Burly is the resident manager there.

Pamela is Irish-American, like many in Green Castle, Joe says. She has two brothers near England, Arkansas, whom they will visit this summer en route to the Clingman-Jones reunion. She is a receptionist at Camp Joy-El, a children’s Bible ministry. The children take “release time” from school to be taught Bible in a non-denominational setting. About 1,000 children participate.

Church is a big part of their lives; they are members of Green Castle Baptist Church.

Joe and Pamela enjoy hiking and golf, and their bull terrier, Maggie Mae.
